One rural, ELCA parish has created an original, online Vacation Bible School that is free for churches to use. “God in My Backyard” hosted by St. John’s Lutheran Parish in Kansas, goes live daily from June 15 to June 17. After each session goes live, it can be accessed at any time to fit any congregation’s VBS schedule.
“God in My Backyard” contains a series of short videos each day. The videos spur kids to explore outside experiencing God in their daily lives of play and imagination. The first day focuses on experiencing God through thankfulness. Learning about praise and how to praise God outside is the theme of the second day. Praying outside like Jesus is the theme of the third and final day.
Other congregations can host this VBS via linking the page on their Facebook or website. This 3-day session requires no extra supplies or print-outs, but it does require some green space and whatever drawing materials families already have on hand. To personalize this VBS for your own congregation, you can create a Facebook group for families to post in.
