Creating Space to Share Ideas

I’m so excited about the kind of space FirstThird.org can be. In my first blog here, I thought I’d play everyone’s favorite ice breaker called Two Truths and a Lie. Here we go!

     1. My favorite color is green.

     2. I’ve yet to join Pinterest.

     3. I have a crush on Joe Mauer

Do you have a guess? The lie is……

     2. I’ve yet to join Pinterest.

In fact, I may be turning into one of those people you’ll catch on their phone at any free moment, looking up a DIY project that I’ll never actually do or bragging at a wedding that I saw that idea on Pinterest. Did you know that over 4 million people visit this site every day?  That’s a lot of creative minds, sharing their gifts and supporting one another along the way.

Now, I like to think I’m crafty and do enjoy cooking, but in reality, won’t take the time to actually accomplish everything I pin on my boards. (Sorry to non-Pinterest members who don’t understand this lingo!) So what’s with my obsession? I love getting lost in the creative minds of other people and discovering how you can craft new things with stuff they already own.

Pinterest has brilliantly created a space where people can share their ideas and others can go to find new ones. It’s a place where all are welcome.

As we begin a new school year, let’s think about how we can create similar spaces in our own contexts of ministry. Spaces for young people and those who walk alongside them to share their gifts and also encourage one another on their faith journey. Spaces to share the joys and challenges in their lives. Spaces to discover new opportunities for faith formation and occasions where we can serve our neighbor. Spaces where all are welcome.

Well, I probably haven’t convinced you to join Pinterest, which wasn’t my goal for this blog anyway! I hope that you find FirstThird.org as a space for you to explore new resources and hear the conversation that is happening around ministry with and for young people. There are opportunities for you to share your thoughts and we hope that you will spread the word about FirstThird.org on Facebook, Twitter, and yes, even Pinterest!
